We are excited to announce the creation of the FAIR Center, which aims to establish vital research infrastructure and enable rehabilitation scientists to advance AI tools to improve outcomes for conditions that limit mobility and participation.

Data science and AI are having a significant impact on biomedical research and the broader society. The advent of generative models, deep learning, and large-scale datasets to train AI models is driving this impact. Unfortunately, rehabilitation research has not had its “ChatGPT moment,” and there exists no foundation model for human movement.

The FAIR Center’s mission is to launch a world-wide collaboration to develop and validate AI models, including a Foundational AI for Rehabilitation (FAIR) Model that addresses a range of tasks, from identifying risky movement patterns in athletes to predicting the walking ability of children with cerebral palsy after surgery.

Scott Delp, Professor of Bioengineering at Stanford University, leads the Center and has brought together experts from bioengineering, artificial intelligence, computer science, mobile health, and clinical rehabilitation to help create an impactful Center. We will grow this interdisciplinary community through the AI models, software tools, data, training, and other research infrastructure we and others in the community will develop. 

The FAIR Center is one of six centers that form the Medical Rehabilitation Research Resource Network. The Center is supported by the National Institutes of Health’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB).

Together with our partners and our community of researchers, we will achieve the potential of AI and data science to improve outcomes for conditions that limit mobility and participation including ACL injuries, osteoarthritis, and cerebral palsy.
