Data science and AI are having a significant impact on biomedical research and broader society. The advent of generative models, deep learning, and large-scale datasets to train AI models is driving this impact. Unfortunately, rehabilitation research has not had its “ChatGPT moment,” and there exists no foundation model for human movement.

The FAIR Center’s mission is to launch a world-wide collaboration to develop and validate a Foundational AI for Rehabilitation (FAIR) Model to address a range of tasks, from identifying risky movement patterns in athletes to predicting the walking ability of children with cerebral palsy after surgery.

To achieve its mission, the FAIR Center has created a team with expertise from bioengineering, computer science, machine learning, and clinical rehabilitation. By providing validated AI tools, the FAIR Center will enable a collaboration of unprecedented scale between engineers, clinicians, people with movement limitations, and rehabilitation researchers.

Together with the FAIR Center community, we will achieve the potential of data science to improve outcomes for conditions that limit mobility and participation. The human and technical infrastructure developed by our Center will have a sustained positive influence on rehabilitation.

Neuromuscular Biomechanics Research Lab (NMBL):  The research lab led by FAIR Center PI Scott Delp. Based at Stanford University, the lab utilizes biomechanics, computer science, imaging, robotics, and neuroscience to analyze muscle function, study human movement, design medical technologies, and optimize human performance.

Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance: The Wu Tsai Human Performance Alliance at Stanford is a university-wide research initiative that leverages Stanford’s exceptional research, outstanding athletics, and innovative spirit. It is creating a community that draws on diverse efforts across campus to uncover the fundamental principles of peak performance. Through their programs, they are developing the knowledge, the people, and the tools to make optimal health more accessible to all. 

Medical Rehabilitation Research Resource (MR3) Network: The MR3 Network is an NIH-supported resource for the research community. It strengthens rehabilitation research by developing the infrastructure that supports the field—central to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)’s mission. It connects investigators to expert guidance, training, technologies, and cross-disciplinary collaborations spanning neuroscience, engineering, behavioral science, and social science.
